Was great reading about the Vic. I remember Sally Starr being there. I believe it was about 60 or 61. I was a Junior in High School at the time. I worked there at the time and was collecting tickets the day she was scheduled to appear. Remember her arriving in a Caddy convertible and coming in thru the main doors. The Vic was run by three people at the time, Bill McLauglin, Bill Aubrey, and Vi McMonicle. They had opened it up after being closed during the 55 flood. It was completely closed for about 5 years and the three operators hired myself, my brother Ed Quinn, and 4 or 5 others I won't name at this time. Anyway, the place was a complete mess and we shoveled bucket load after bucket load of mud from the place. cleaned and repaired all the seats, painted, replaced light bulbs on the marquee, and shampooed the carpeting. By opening night, the place was in good shape. Don't remember the movie they started with on opening night but there was a good crowd as there was most weekend nights. My brother was the projectionist. One film I always remembered was a Trailer that we found up in the projection room. It was a black and white 5 minute piece entitled "Tamaqua Goes to War". It was about Tamaqua during the WWII war years and about how Tamaqua contributed to the War effort. Pictures of people buying Bonds, collecting pots and pans, and things of that nature. I believe I remember seeing military tanks, jeeps, etc coming thru Tamaqua on railway flatbeds. We played that piece before each film attraction. Saw it many times. Often inquired about it but no one seems to remember it but me.

Bill Aubrey approached us about starting a Horror show. There were about 6 of us who dressed in weird costumes and would sneak around the theater during a Horror movie. One of the costumes was a pretty realistic gorilla costume. I know the guy who wore it still lives in Tamaqua. We played the Vic in Tamaqua, a theatre in Mahanoy City, Freeland, and maybe Pottsville. We were supposed to get paid for our "acting talents" but I don't remember the ticket receipts being enough to take care of us. It was a fun place to work but after high school, was time to move on. From the cars in that photo, was probably about that time we all worked there. On another note, I worked at the Majestic for a while during summer in grade school years. Swept up after movies for Free Passes....no $$$. What a bummer!

very nice article about the "Vic" do you remember when both theaters in town showed the same movie all weekend? The Mahoning DriveIn is still open run by the guy who operates the Angela Theater in Coaldale. Can't think of his name but he was an usher there as a kid. I go there sometimes for a Saturday matinee just about $4 (sneak in my own munchies & soda) Sadly there are no 3 Stooges shorts and no serials. But still a neat place w/3 (yes 3) screens & a Rocky Horror picture show once a month (w/live performers too)

Rick aka your brother

I remember Sally Starr, but not her being at the Vic.

Gary, Do you remember when Sally Starr made a guest appearance at the Vic? The crowds used to push through the doors after the show. It was 35 cents for admission if my memory is correct. Ruth (Susie)

Thanks for that article about this old cinemamemories of yours, I myself had the luck of having a father, who managed 3 cinemas, I grew up in them, played there, slept there on the balcony, the biggest had a 1000 seats, I still dream of it and this creepy darkness that waited behind those huge, red curtains. Now all are lost and the big one is ruined into six small boxes...no more Eden Palace and a PALACE it was....you would have loved it too! (Still got some memorabilias, old posters, and so one...)

The last movie I saw there was Dr. Zhivago.
