Last Tuesday I took a walk. That in and of itself isn't so unusual. What was unusual was the length of it. After walking all the way up First Avenue from downtown San Diego to Hillcrest, across University Ave. to Park Blvd., and then back home, my pedometer read that I had walked 3.99 miles.
And I knew that couldn't be right. I had walked for over 2.5 hours, and I know I walk at least 2 miles an hour (Hey! Slow and steady wins the race!). I had to have walked close to 5 miles.
So I drove the exact same route. Luckily it was one I could pretty much recreate in my car, since it was all on main surface streets. And the distance according to my car's odometer?
6.25 miles.
So, all this time I've been walking, I've actually been walking about a third more than I thought. That time I walked 8.39 miles? I probably actually walked 10.8 miles (no wonder I was so sore!). Needless to say, I've recalibrated my pedometer and hope it's right now. Since math has never been my strong suit, I'm fearful that the length of my stride was the culprit in this, but I don't know at this point...it's all pretty confusing to me.
ADDED: I was able to fix my pedometer and get it pretty close to what I think is the correct settings. Today I walked almost 6.25 miles...and I'm convinced they were REAL miles.
Have a wonderful Christmas Eve and Christmas. Joe is sick (upstairs in bed with a bad case of bronchitis. I've never celebrated Christmas Eve alone. It ain't so bad!!! Peace, quiet, VOD, gin...
Love,
Mel.
