We won’t be live-blogging the Academy Awards tomorrow night, for various reasons. But that doesn’t mean we can’t pick the winners, now does it? We continue our look at the nominees: Best Actor/Best Supporting Actor (click here!), Best Actress/Best Supporting Actress (below), and finally Best Director/Best Film (on Oscar Sunday tomorrow).
ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE
Annette Bening in The Kids Are All Right. It's hard for me to relate to this film, since I haven't been in a lesbian relationship in over 15 years. But if Bening wins, it’s more a career achievement award or a thank you for finally castrating Warren Beatty and making Hollywood safe for women of all shapes, sizes, ages, and roles.
Nicole Kidman in Rabbit Hole. Didn’t see it, but if I know Kidman, it’s all about the accent. We should stop awarding actors for doing accents and imitations. In fact, let's retroactively remove Jamie Foxx's Oscar for Ray, okay?
Jennifer Lawrence in Winter's Bone. This kid is all right, but it’s way too early to give her a Best Actress Oscar. If they do, they’ll screw up the rest of her life and she’ll end up signing autographs at comic book conventions by the time she’s 30 (she is playing a young Mystique in X-Men First Class).
Natalie Portman in Black Swan. Didn’t see this, but from everything I read, it’s Portman’s award to lose this year, although she really, Really, REALLY scares me.
Michelle Williams in Blue Valentine. Didn't see this one, either, but I hear she's wonderful in it, and she's grown up from Dawson's Creek to become a really amazing actress. I mean Dawson's-freakin'-Creek?! Who knew?!
ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Amy Adams in The Fighter. She’s really sexy and feisty in this, but it’s not an Academy Award level performance. But she does get my vote for Best Slut Makeover (Enchanted, indeed).
Helena Bonham Carter in The King's Speech. This is really Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush’s movie (that’s the real love story). Carter is fine as the Queen Mum, but it’s not Oscar winning.
Melissa Leo in The Fighter. Boy, I hated her in this, but that’s the point, isn’t it? She did some kind of ad campaign on her own which infuriated the Hollywood types that vote for Oscars (Who is she to self-aggrandize herself in Hollywood? That's UNHEARD of!), so sadly she may have screwed herself, but she has my vote as the worst supporting mom ever.
Hailee Steinfeld in True Grit. See Jennifer Lawrence above. Let the kid be a kid a little while longer, please.
Jacki Weaver in Animal Kingdom. Didn’t see it AND she’s Australian. There are enough Aussie actors in America now. Let’s not import anymore, please.
