The otherwise useless local Fox affiliate ran a "trailer" for the sixth season of 24 this morning, right before the 8:00am show began, that was very tantalizing. It showed the U.S. under siege. A bus blows up in a crowded city street, glimpses of Fox News Channel reports of chaos in Houston and San Antonio, and a sneak peek at the new president: Wayne Palmer! (We're still trying to figure out the timeline on this one.) We see Bill Buchanan and Chloe in CTU, Karen Hayes and new cast member Peter MacNichol with the president. And in one scene, a miltary transport plane lands, the back door opens ominiously on the darkened interior as Curtis and Buchanan walk slowly towards it. Curtis' hand nervously fingers the gun holstered at his side. First off, the Chinese intelligence officer who was one of the last people Jack Bauer--and we--saw at the end of last season on that slow boat to China. And then, there he is, bearded, disheveled, broken: Jack Bauer. A quick montage of him looking in the mirror, undressing, showing numerous scars, follows. And then it's Jack back in action.
If there's a plot to this trailer, it's that Bauer is brought home to be be sacrificed. The terrorists are again Middle Eastern in nature, and someone really wants Bauer dead (my guess would be this has something to do with Marwan, some revenge plot). One cryptic moment follows one typical one: Jack telling the president, "Mr. President, I know what's expected of me," on the heels of him yelling "Throw down your weapons!" in typical Jack fashion.
The new issue of the quarterly 24 magazine from Titan Books (now available at Barnes and Noble, Borders, etc.) reveals a few tidbits of the upcoming season. James Cromwell plays Jack's father, thus getting another Bauer family member into the fold. In a very revealing interview, new producer David Fury admits the writers blew the whole return of Kim Bauer storyline last year, dropping the ball on what he called the only family member Jack has left. Evidently not. (We wonder if this means Elisha Cuthbert won't do the show anymore, thus necessitating a "new" family tie for Jack.) Whatever the case, we'll find out starting Sunday, January 14 as 24 returns once again with a 4-hour, 2-night mini-series debut.
